As You Know, Bob Dialogue

October 9th, 2012 (08:10 pm)

Ok – here’s a classic piece of dialogue from Castle season 5 episode 2 which niftily demonstrates “You know, Bob” writing and makes me want to reach for the cut-throat razor.

Beckett: The department has a strict policy about co-workers dating.

Castle: But as I’m not technically being paid, we aren’t co-workers. Look, no one is going to find out, I haven’t even told Alexis or my mother.

Bethett: That’s because they are both in Europe, celebrating her graduation.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, Castle really needed to be told that. Goodness, perhaps he’d forgotten. (let’s not dwell on why he’s not over there, that’s irrelevant to my need to go on a rampage in the Castle writing room….)

Writers: Don’t do this.

IAccording to all the books I've read about writing, this is a HUGE no-no. Awful.

And all it would take is changing that line to something like "They'd know. Even if they're three thousand miles away, they'd know" or whatever.

THIS IS WHY I HATE US TV. /rant

We used to love the show, but we eventually gave it up because of stuff like that. My husband and I now use the term "Castle moment" to mean a scene in any show in which a character gets a sudden look of recognition on his or her face, harks back to an unrelated comment made by a family member earlier in the episode, and immediately solves a mystery.

BLARGH. I really tried to keep a tight rein on "what would this character already know? what would they consider remarkable enough to notice? what would they take as a given and pass on by? and WOULD THEY KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE THIS THE WAY I DO?"

Nobody's told me yet that I screwed up. I really hope I didn't.
